Our traditional family Valentines dinner

This started 6 years ago and continues today. It is now as looked forward to by the older kiddos as it is by us. We had salmon with dill cream sauce, potatoes, green beans almondine, PINK sparkling juice, brownies with ice cream (both homemade and delish), lots of candy, cards, roses, gifts, but most of all a table filled with happy, laughing, precious little people who fill our lives with constant joy! Jimmy and I have so very much to celebrate on Valentines... Our deep, strong love and the five lives our love is represented through! Happy Valentines to the six most incredible people I am blessed to love!!

A visit to Granna for Valentines

Jimmy drove the girls and I up to see Granna at the nursing home tonight. She was so happy to see the girls (and me) and receive their handmade Valentines cards and some yummy dark chocolate candies (not handmade).

The girls are learning a lot about life outside themselves by their visits to Granna. It is teaching them many things like how to make engaging conversations, how to politely listen to and enjoy stories from days gone by, how to have compassion for those who may be sad or lonely, how to use those manners we practice so much at home... Etc. The list goes on. The girls will be better people for these times with Granna and will forever carry with them fond memories of the relationship they built even at such a young age.

I have been overwhelmed today at how incredibly blessed I am to have my amazing husband! I never could have imagined finding someone to have so much fun with, laugh so hard with, be so madly in love with and just enjoy the reality of everyday life with.

He is such an unbelievably dedicated father. He loves playing with the kiddos, always thinking up new games... Oh and somehow he always finds a way to weave a math lesson into just about any activity (a huge plus for a homeschool mom)!

He wont run a single errand without taking his little carbon copy Ben with him. He loves having him around and Ben knows it! He is building relationships with each of our children that are so real and make such a difference in who they are becoming.

I am just so proud of the kind of person he is and is ever learning to be. He is so generous with his time and resources, always willing to help in any way. He is incredibly unselfish and blesses my life in countless ways.

Mostly I just love how much he makes me laugh... At least once a day I am hysterical over something hilarious he says or does... It's just a fun life we live!

First real haircut

Today Jimmy took Ben to get his first real big boy haircut. We buzzed his head all summer but it was a mess and needed some professional care at this point several months since his last buzz.

Jimmy room him to Midway Barber Shop... A truly old fashioned barber shop. Known for no nonsense men and boys haircuts. According to Jimmy they don't do any "ridiculous froo froo stuff that makes you feel like you are at a salon"... They just cut your hair plain and simple. Apparently Jimmy and I are looking for something entirely different when choosing a hair care professional! :)

Anyway, I digress ...

I wasn't there but Jimmy said Ben did so good. Sat still and was a big brave boy! Oh and he looks as handsome as ever! Daddy got his done first so little man could see how it's done.

He even got a certificate stating that he had graduated from "babyhood"! He came running in wide eyed when he got home and was so proud to show me his official paper and his cut! I just love that boy more than words can explain! He is growing up fast and turning into such a little man.

Fort Worth Stock Show

Family tradition - this is our 7th year and the best one yet! The kids had so much fun seeing the animals and just being there as a family. We watched a neat milking demonstration, got a few fun souvenirs, saw tons of farm animals up close and personal and ate some junk food.... Couldn't be a better day!

The kids all got an ice cream scoop at the milking demonstration and when we went outside they spent about 20 minutes throwing them up on the air and running after it to see who could be the first to pick it up and throw it again.... Our kids are easily entertained! ;)

Beauty and the Beast 3D

Again....

Well, we didn't make it two full weeks before we had another big injury. This time a fractured elbow... Otherwise known as a "broken arm".

Last night at about 7:00 Rivers was sitting in a chair in our living room (over carpet) and he fell out of the chair catching his fall with his right arm. It looked totally harmless (I saw him fall) BUT he immediately started screaming that "this is for real" scream. Jimmy ran over and picked him up and we started looking him over for injury. As jimmy started feeling of his right arm he got even more hysterical and we realized his little wrist was swollen and bruising. So we spent the rest of the evening icing it and giving him Tylenol for the pain. When he still seemed to be in quite a bit of pain even with the Tylenol I knew something worse than just a bruise was going on.

So this morning I took him to his regular doctor they referred us to a pediatric orthopedic doctor who confirmed with an x-ray that he did indeed have a small break in the elbow. NO!

Now my baby boy will be in this awful cast for FOUR weeks. It makes me so sad to think of him having to deal with this massive thing while he plays and sleeps and eats for four whole weeks. I am praying it goes by fast and that it doesn't bother him much!

He is such a sweet little guy.... But boy is he gonna give us a run for our money.

Our little business man

It has become routine that if Ben wakes up before Jimmy leaves for work he insists on putting on his dress shirt, navy blazer and tie..... And he wears them all day until Jimmy gets home and he and Ben put on their comfortable clothes! It is precious!

Today he ditched the tie after lunch but still rocked the blazer and dress shirt the entire day!

Such an interesting year

This year involved one of the hardest ten weeks of my life with a back injury followed by surgery andI a long recovery. While I would never want to relive it, I will say it did give me such a great appreciation for even the daily mundane things of life. When you can't do laundry, you wish you could. When you can't cook a meal, you wish you could. When you can't clean your own house, you wish you could. Life is all in the perspective.

While that struggle seemed so great it is entirely overshadowed and barely remembered by the amazing joy we received in late July when we found out we were expecting our 5th child and in November we were given the most incredible health report ever on our sweet Serene whose MRI came back perfect after her 2010 MRI showed the beginnings of a tumor. A miracle!

What a full circle life has taken over this year. Major lows, major highs. We leave 2011 with a lot of things learned and a larger view of what really counts in life and we enter 2012 with the anticipation of welcoming another sweet baby girl into our hearts and home. My heart is full, how could I ask for more!

I can hardly believe my baby girl is 4 and soon to not be the youngest girl in the house. We had a very fun birthday celebration with her choices of homemade broccoli cheese soup (thank you Pioneer Women), strawberry cupcakes with pink icing (of course), musical chairs and dancing.

The turtle earns his shell..

Yesterday as I am in the kitchen making cupcakes for Serenes birthday I hear a very bad scream come through the screen door to the backyard, I grab a towel to clean off my hands that I just cracked and egg with and turn around to see Anna carrying a screaming Rivers with blood pouring down his face. As I quickly get an explanation I learn that he was hit in the head by his brother with a golf club... I think at that point I kind of panicked. All I can see is this massive knot and blood pouring out if it... There was so much blood that I can't even see his eyes to see if they are dilating ok and whatever else I am supposed to look for in the event of a concussion just isn't registering in my brain right then. I finally got some composure and started calling all the necessary people. My mom happened to already be on her way to bring a birthday lunch to Serene so I knew as soon as she got there I would head to the ER. As I was waiting for her I look down at myself to realize I am covered in blood... So I race to the back change my clothes and was headed to the ER just minutes later after mom got there.

All the way to the ER I am talking to Rivers and trying to keep him awake. Finally after literally hitting every red light I arrived only to realize the only spot left was at in the absolute last row of parking spots (the hospital is under major construction and there is very little parking). Ugh!

Once we did get in there the process went super fast and everyone was so kind and helpful. We have had to use this ER a few other times for babies with super high fevers and every time they have given fabulous ansd efficient care.

While I was waiting in the room for the doctor Jimmy arrived and I could tell he was shocked by the bloody faced little boy who greeted him at the door. I assured him that they had already looked for signs of head injury/trauma and that all checked out so other than the cut he seemed to be fine. Once Jimmy knew he was ok he started telling Rivs what a big boy he was and what a cool scar he was gonna have. Then he took a picture of his bloody face a sent it proudly to every guy he knows. :)

Finally the doctor came in and told us that they were gonna have to stitch him up and explained the process. Initially they just put some numbing meds on his cut for 30 minutes. When it came time for the stitches they swaddled him up in a blanket with his arms at his side... Think straight jacket... Ugh! Anyway, at the point of getting swaddled his little lip started quivering and tears started falling. I almost lost it but I actually held it together and Jimmy and I just comforted him. The nurse held his head still, and I held his body still while the doctor stitched. She was amazing... She had him totally sewn up and back in my arms in about 3-4 minutes. He screamed like I have newer heard him scream BUT, the second he was back in my arms he stopped and was his perfectly calm self again! He got a yummy Popsicle and sat quietly eating it... What a brave little trooper.
So ever since Rivs was born Jimmy has always called him a little turtle with no shell. :) He has always had this big head and skinny little neck... Kind of like a bobble head. Jimmy has always told him that he would earn his shell when he turned two... An official grown up size turtle he tells him. Rivs always laughs and giggles when Jimmy tells him all this as if he somehow understands the sweet natured joking. So as we are getting ready to leave the ER, Jimmy looks over at Rivs and says, "it's official, you earned your shell" (said in Jimmy's best baby talk voice of course). Rivs got a huge smile and laughed a sweet little chuckle.... I kinda think he knew! :)

Our own little tradition

One of my favorite traditions JZ and I have is opening our gifts to each other late at night on the 23rd! It is such a fun time just for us and allows us to focus on watching the kiddos open on Christmas Eve! I love Jimmy so much and feel so cherished and loved by him! I am very blessed!

Christmas Eve night

After a yummy dinner we headed home to open gifts... Our tradition since we got married has been to have our own Christmas on Christmas Eve which includes opening all our gifts! We didn't take many pics opening gifts... But here are a few.

This had to be the most exciting Christmas so far. ... Four little ones so enthusiastic and happy about the whole season! Such joy!

Christmas Eve dinner

Jimmy made reservations for us at Maggianos at North Park and we went for an early dinner! He is always thinking up the most festive things to do. We all got dressed up and enjoyed such a nice dinner! The boys even did well. ... Although, I sure hope shoveling spaghetti in you mouth with both hands is acceptable because I know a couple of little boys who chose that as their method of eating tonight! ;)

Now home to eat Cheesecake Factory cheesecake and open Christmas presents! The absolute best part of Christmas for Jimmy and I both is watching the kiddos open gifts!!!

Thank you JZ for such an amazing evening so far! You are the most amazing husband and dad ever!

Christmas Celebration at the Meyerson

Last night we took the girls to the Dallas Symphony Christmas Celebration. It was amazing ... As always! So fun for the girls too with all their favorite songs, audience sing a longs, a visit from santa, a children's choir, snow falling from the ceiling at the end and not to mention one of the most amazing orchestras, a 200+ person choir and the most glorious symphony centers in the world! Can it get much better than all that?

Also, a good friend from church years ago was the featured soloist so we got to go back stage afterward and talk with her. The girls thought that was pretty special! She has one of the most angelic voices EVER... So special to hear her again!

Can't wait for next year!

Fun in the rain

Before the latest cold front set in today (and thank goodness it did... Nothing I hate more than a warm December) we had a nearly 70 degree day with an evening rain. I let the children go out and run around the backyard and splash in the puddles and, essentially get totally soaked. When I snapped these pics the girls had already headed back to get cleaned up for dinner but the boys played an extra 15 minutes or so (no surprise).

I really love watching them jump in puddles and get muddy... I think it is good for the soul! All children should do it often! :)

A Christmas Sunday night

On Sunday before church we told the children that if everyone came home and worked hard to get the house cleaned we would all go for a fun Sunday evening officer Hamburgers, shopping and Christmas lights.

So after us all working super hard, we headed off to visit my Granna in the nursing home first off. It was so good to see her and let the children spend some time with her. After that we headed out for hamburgers! The kids all loved Kincades with its picnic style tables... They thought the burgers were good too. Next we went to Toys R Us (in the same parking lot) and let the girls buy their gifts for each other. They have been earning money to buy something for the other and had finally gotten enough. That was a lot of fun watching them get so excited picking for the other one!

Next stop was downtown Grapevine! All the children loved walking around seeing all the displays and dancing as a family to the synchronized music lights in the main square! Ben was totally fascinated by the polar bear display and communicated to me that he wanted his picture taken with them. So he hopped up there and proudly posed... It was precious! We were down there for nearly an hour and had the best time!

Last stop, cookies to eat in the car and finish out our ride through Town Square.... Yum!!

This moment

This morning my little man came over and snuggled up with me and fell back to sleep for a while and as I was holding him I was so overcome with that moment. I know that in just a few short years he will be too big and too busy to snuggle with mom but most of all I was struck by the size of that little arm in my hand. So small and not so strong yet but soon to be a big strong bicep of a man. Time goes by way too fast and I hope remember to cherish each and every moment of the little years!

Polar Express

On Sunday we rode the Polar Express in Grapevine. The children had a fun time and enjoyed the "show" and the ride itself. There was even a visit from Santa... They weren't all that impressed by that simply because they don't believe in Santa.... Ben was even a bit scared... But all in all we had a nice time!

Today we walked down our street and took in some absolutely beautiful scenery. We played outside and hiked our property for about two hours. Weekend in Austin

Jimmy and I spent last weekend having a lovely little getaway to Austin! It was a blast just the two of us eating at hole in the walls and walking around the campus... BUT, the highlight was taking in my first UT game!! It was sooo much fun!!!! I was so fascinated with all the tradition and songs and cheers. I loved watching Jimmy fall right back in step with all this and cheer on his longhorns! He graduated in 1998 and had only been back to one game since. I was thrilled to be his date at this one!

He also took me in the business school and showed me where several of his classes were! Since we didn't meet til long after college, it was neat to see where his life was at way back then and experience a small part of it!

I am so grateful for such a special time away with my sweet husband and very grateful for our sweet friends who took exceptional care of all our little ones while we were away!

Asleep in the fridge

He was playing in the fridge while I was cooking and got really quiet... I looked in and this is what I found. This has to be one of my most unusual and adorable things I ever seen one of children do! :) Rivs is a very hot natured child... it can be freezing and he still kicks all his covers off and gets very frustrated (in his sleep) when you try to put them back on. I guess he sat down in the fridge and pulled the door close to him and it felt so good he was out! :)This is one moment I will never forget!

Thankful for

It is likely an obvious list but I feel that it needs to be written.... Never a moment when you can be too grateful..

1. My husband, who always sees the very best in me, no matter what. Who always encourages me to keep going when I want to quit. Who believes in my goals and hopes and dreams. Who loves watching my lip- synching... No matter how cheesy (his current favorite, Rollin In The Deep, Adele). Who makes me laugh til I cry. Who can stay calm through ANYTHING and who has been my rock through a tough year of waiting on news about our Serene.

We are the perfect match.... I love every second we spend together... Especially the ones with him begging me to do another round of "Rollin In The Deep"!!! :)

2. Anna, my serious, smart child who knows how to love deeply and finds joy in small everyday things. She wants to try anything new, hates watching more than 30 minutes of TV a day and loves to play with her little brothers and sister. This, my first child, is a joy beyond words to me. She is blossoming into such an amazing little lady and is a front toothless beauty!

3. Serene, full of joy and kindess, this little caretaker is our family nurse! She makes and gives cards to all those she knows.... An encourager at heart! She never meets a stranger and will engage anyone we meet in a lengthy conversation about life with 2 brothers, a big sister and another baby sister on the way! Wanna know anything, just ask.... She will tell you!

4. Ben, where to begin. The MOST intnese child I have ever seen. Incredibly athleticly skilled even at 2 1/2 years old. A champion wrestler, golfer and baseball player. Wanna see a future tour swing, watch this guy hit the golf ball... Amazing! He loves to play games, "sing" songs with animal sounds, do puzzles, read books and watch shows. He ADORES his big sister Anna, loves to follow Serene around and finds no greater joy than wrestling his brother in a choke hold! (yikes) He gives the biggest hugs and kisses. He is a total 100% Daddys boy. He sticks to Jimmy like glue, copies EVERYTHING daddy does and admires his dad intensely. He throws the most massive trantrums and gets the most excited you have ever seen over a tiny lizzard.... Like I said.. This guy is intense!!!

5. Rivers, OH MY GOODNESS, ever since this guy learned to walk 6 months ago I haven't stopped.... He is on the go every second he is not sleeping. He can climb anything and does. He loves dirt, sand, grass, mud... What can I say, he is one with nature... I mean his name is Rivers! He has a hysteric laugh and is fully entertained by his 3 older siblings. He doesn't ever need mommy.... Unless he is being wrestled into the Ben choke hold and suddenly he is transformed back to a needy infant who needs mommy to hold him... I cherish those fewer and further between moments of that sweet head on my shoulder and those sweet words of "mama mama"! He loves to run, hit anything with a stick and eats enough for 3 people!

6. Patience, I don't know her yet... Not really but oh how I love her. The first little girl in 4 years. The need for pink has come again. We can't wait to all love on her and cherish our new family member. For now though I am enjoying my own world with her... Her little kicks, and movements remind me what a real a special person she already is!

I am thankful for the joy my family brings. I love each one of them dearly and I am so grateful God put each one of them in my life!! What immense blessings!

MRI results day

After waiting a LONG week we headed back to Childrens on Friday for Serenes annual appointment and to hear the results of her MRI.

I am not a doctor so I wont go into great detail but last year (2010) on the MRI they saw a bend in her optic nerve.... Something that was not there on the MRI the year before (2009). The doctor explained that this bend/curving is the first sign they always see when a tumor is beginning its formation. It is a long process (over a few years) so not much you can do but wait it out and go back the next year for another MRI and hope and pray the bend/curve stayed the same and didn't get worse.

When we went back on Friday the doctor was shocked to tell us that not only had things not gotten any worse, they hadn't stayed the same.... They were better! BETTER! Her optic nerve shows no signs of the bend/curve it showed last year.

Inexplicable? To some,maybe, not for us. We prayed and God granted our request!

Dad and his golfing buddy

Jimmy and Ben were hitting golf balls in the backyard and Ben suddenly discovered that he and Jimmy both have these backpack carriers on their bags.... So, he wanted he and Daddy to both put on their bags and walk all over the backyard together! They did and it was so cute! I love that Ben and his daddy love each other so much. I love that Ben wants to do everything exactly like Jimmy and most of all I love that Jimmy is such a wonderful Daddy to copy!!

MRI day

Serene did so good at her MRI. She took the IV needle like a grown up and didn't even flinch. She is such an amazingly sweet child and brought joy to everyone she came in contact with at the hospital.

Cousin Ella!!!!!

We had so much fun on October 31 handing out candy at our church festival! The girls were huge helpers and our friends the McDonalds even joined us to hand out candy... Soo fun! Thanks for your help Brock and Brady! Let's do it again next year.

BTW, we had a UT cheerleader, Angelina Ballerina, Ben dressed as my dad (my dad wears a suit and tie almost everyday) and a farmer!!

Fall festival

It has been our tradition for 5 years now to attend the FBC Colleyville fall festival. We love it! This year did not disappoint..... Face painting, pony rides, bounce slides, obstacle courses, climbing walls, mini train rides, and of course candy. All the kids had a wonderful time.

BTW, no pics of Ben. He just laughs and runs from the camera. He thinks it is hysterical ... I don't! ;)

Wedding

We had so much fun this weekend at the wedding of life long friend of ours. She is such a sweet girl and we were thrilled to be a part of her special day! My dad performed the ceremony and did an AMAZING job! The reception was lovely and we all enjoyed dancing and dining the night away! The girls looked forward to this wedding for weeks and loved every minute of it. I even got to dance with my dad and my Hubby... Best parts of the night for me!!

We had soo much fun tonight at the pumpkin patch and corn maze! We got lost in the maze and had the best time trying to get out!! After the maze we had fresh roasted corn on the con, freshly popped kettle corn, caramel apples and popcorn balls. A little reward I guess for finding our way out of the maze! ;)

In school we are studying the story of Jospeh and in particular his time spent in Egypt. Today we made these simple collars made out of paper plates to represent the collars worn by the Egyptians at that time. The girls both enjoyed this project quite a bit!

While Anna goes to tennis two days a week the little ones and I go to the playground with our friends from church. They have seven children and their older ones play tennis with Anna. Our younger children are all grouped into similar ages so they each have a playmate! Our youngest boys were born just three days apart!

My preppy boy

We were sorting thru fall clothes the other day and the girls found this outfit my mom bought for Ben when he was just a baby. She loved it and had to have it to she bought it about 2 years in advance. When the girls found it they insisted on dressing Ben up in it and once he saw the tie he was all in! Daddy wears a tie to work everyday and since Ben tries to copy EVERYTHING Jimmy does he was giddy to have a tie on. So giddy in fact that he wore the outfit ALL DAY. He took a nap in it. He went to the playground in it. He played in the sand in it. He had snack time in it. He went hysterical when I tried to take it off and I finally figured out what was going on.... He wanted Daddy to see him in it. So, I went with it and once Daddy did get home he was so excited to show Daddy that they matched.

I don't really know if there is anything sweeter than a little boy who wants to be exactly like his dad! I am so glad he has a dad that is truly someone to be looked up to and copied!!

Omni - IMAX

Saturday morning mom and dad were kind enough to watch Rivers and we took the oldes three to see Animalopolis at the IMAX. I LOVE the Omni and always have so it was so fun to take the kiddos there! This was a great show geared towards little children with narration that had a Dr. Seuss feel to it. They loved it and can't wait to go back.... Although, when the lighta first go down at the Omni the do a little demonstration of how the speakers work and when that bass speaker boomed Anna about jumped out of her seat. She immediately wanted to switch seats so she could sit by Daddy. She got a seat next to him and held his arm the whole time. So sweet!

Pizza night

Pizza night used to be a regular occurrence in our home but for one reason or another we had gotten away from it. However, now that fall is just around the corner we are establishing some of our fun family routines again... One of them, homemade pizza night. Our very favorite pizza is one we first discovered on an episode of Barefoot Contessa.... We simply call it "Ina Pizza". It is in reality a Margarita Pizza and is soo yummy! Tonight we also let the children make their own, only thing was the two middle children were still napping at 6:00 (long day swimming) so it ended up being only Anna making the kid pizzas. I think she realized how boring her life would be without a house full of siblings. She made some super cute pizzas for each kid in the house including some adorable smiley faces on some!

Jimmy makes the dough from scratch and it is sooo yummy! We had a fun pizza night even though two people slept thru the whole thing. Serene was NOT happy when she woke up and realized she missed getting to make her own. She looked forward to it all day. We promised another chance soon so it looks like another pizza night is forthcoming! Yay!!

"End" of summer

We had a special "end"of summer weekend this past weekend! It is only sort of the end of summer since it is still 100+ EVERY DAY! :(

However, our school, along with all of Texas is back in session so to a large degree summer of 2011 is behind us. As a family we have had such an incredible summer. An amazing vacation, tons of swimming, lots of time with extended family, and of course finding out about baby #5.... Etc. The weather has made it unbearable in so many ways but that's Texas.... You just deal!

This weekend as a end of summer / back to school celebration we let the girls each pick something special they wanted as a little gift. Anna decided on roller skates and Serene chose a princess night gown. They are both thrilled with their choices!

Then on Sunday night we let them pick their favorite take-out so they chose spaghetti from a little Italian hole in the wall down the street. It was even yummy for a pregnant mom who is grossed out by just about everything right now.

We had such a fun weekend and then Monday morning bright and early we started our new school year. Our first day was amazing and everyone was excited for the next day. I even purchased Preschool curriculum for Serene and Ben for the year and they loved it. It is simple and doesn't take long but they felt important and I know they learned a few things too... So it was a win win!!!

Now if it could just start feeling like fall it would really make it nice!! :)

Library Club

Today was our final Terrific Tuesday. This is our church library summer reading club and weekly story time. We go each week and the children hear stories, do crafts, have snacks and check out books. My girls both won for most pages read for their age group. Anna also won for Bible memory for age group. They learned Bible verses each week and she learned the most in her age category.

I was so proud of them for sitting down and spending time reading and listening to many many books this summer. It has been a VERY hot summer so that helped get lots of extra reading time in! :)

It was such a special day because we had the awards banquet which included pizza and cake... A kid favorite! There was also a sweet little lady who is a professional story teller who told the children stories for nearly an hour and they loved it. She was so interesting and clearly knew how to get the childrens attention!

To top it all off Daddy surprised the girls and came to the party!! What an incredible Daddy! He came all the way from Plano and stayed the entire two hours! They were so proud to get their awards in front of Daddy!! You are the best ever JZ!!

Although the boys did attend the club with us all summer and loved it, we thought it might be best for them to stay home today because it was a little more formal than normal. So while we pizza partied at church Nana came over and brought little pizzas for the boys and a special dessert. Thank you Nana for making it a happy day for our little guys as well.

Can't wait for next years club! We all love it!!!

Our last day of vacation was spent at my Grannas house and then driving home. We went to breakfast with my grandma and then headed to downtown McLean to take pictures in front of my Pa Johnnie boot shop. This is where I spent many summer days playing behind the counter... Sometimes actually helping out... Sometimes just pretending it was my store and I was writing up customers. He had one of those old fashioned cash registers and I loved to here it go "cha-ching"! I have many fond memories of this place and I was excited to show it to my kiddos! They walked right it and started playing just like I used to. They had a wonderful time and wanted to play longer than we really had time for. I am so glad they enjoyed it as much as I did!

We ended the day with our six hour drive home. It was an amazing vacation and we wont hesitate going on another road trip. The children did wonderful and we all made great memories that will last a lifetime!

Before we left Breckenridge Jimmy decided to take the three oldest on one last gondola ride up the mountain to play in the snow! They had quite a fun time or so I am assuming from the pictures!!

The day ended with the VERY long drive back to my grandmothers house. Twelve hours in the car.... Yikes! We made it around midnight.... Tired but in one piece! :)

Yesterday we had one of our best days yet... I guess we saved the best for last!

Highlights:

Walk along the Blur River through Breckenridge (Anna lost and swallowed her other front tooth at the very beginning of this 3 mile walk)

Ate lunch at a pleasant little cafe on Main St. That serves breakfast all day

Drove to a lookout over Lake Dillion where we could see Breck in one direction and Frisco in the other.... About 12,000 ft up!! BREATHTAKING! !

While at the lookout we took a walk up into the woods and and found a spot to feed the chipmunks! The children had the best time EVER! Ben in particular loved this part!

Sidenote... Serene really enjoyed doing puzzles at the kitchen table and Ben took a little afternoon rest "reading" a book by the window!

It was such a lovely last full day!

We hiked about half way up a mountain to a gorgeous lake and look-out.We stopped to snack and enjoy the most amazing scenery! It was so relaxing up there hearing the river run along our path!

After our hike we had a yummy lunch at a little restaurant on Main.

Traveling with little ones

E pJimmy and I both have to admit we were somewhat surprised at how well the children did on our 16 hour road trip. I mean they did really well! If left up to me I think I would have chosen to stay home and have a "staycation" just assuming a long road trip would be a nightmare. However, we purchased the week rental on this home at a charity event silent auction we attend every year and so in my mind I felt like I was "forcing" myself to go. I have found my entire life that if I am nervous about something but kind of excited about it too and want to back out at the last second, that usually means I am on the verge of doing something I will never forget if I just push thru and go and enjoy!

This is one of those times. I think too many people let the logistics of life keep them from things the might otherwise truly enjoy or love doing. Very sad!

I remember when I was in my early 20s a friend and I planned a trip to Europe.... At the last second I panicked and thought I can't go across the world by myself (with just my one friend) and rent a car and drive all over Germany. I almost backed out. I went anyway and had one of the most memorable times of my life. That trip gave me so much confidence and made me realize what a strong young woman I really was deep inside! Sounds cheesy I suppose but it takes all different things to help people grow and stretch .... I needed to get outside my comfort zone a bit. We all do!

The next example that really stands out to me was one VERY rainy January Friday night in 2004. A guy and his wife that I knew from the Chamber (I worked as the Event and Public Relations Coordinator there) had asked me to meet them in Southlake and ride to Dallas to meet some friends for dinner. One of those friends was this guys brother named Jimmy. I had a long day at work and hadn't had time to shower or fix myself up at all... It was raining, my hair was frizzy, I was tired and I just didn't want to go. I however, forced myself to go knowing that the evening might be somewhat enjoyable and a better end to my crappy day.... Turns out I met the love of my life that night!! Glad I went!

So here we are many miles from home staring out at snow peaked mountains, sipping coffee in 50 incredible degrees (compared to the 100 it will be at home today)... And I am so glad we ventured out! It would have seemed easier to stay home but because we gave it a shot we have made some of the most amazing memories yet with our kiddos and we are only on day 2!

I'm glad I met Jimmy that night and he forces me out of my comfort zone a bit. You miss out on so much living over-cautious!!

After leaving my Grannas at 6:00 am we made very good time to Colorado. Just past the CO border we stopped at a local market and got picnic food! We took the food to a local park and played and ate.

A "hayride"

Well there isn't really any hay involved but last fall my dad surprised us with this little trailer to attach to our riding mowed and take the kiddos for rides! Since it was fall we automatically called it a hayride! The name stuck and we have "hayrides" year round!!

Birthday celebration

Yesterday we celebrated with a small intimate little affair with just our family of six and grandparents.

We got take-out hamburgers and fries from Mooyah and cupcakes from a little organic cupcake shop here in Colleyville. We also ate my new summer specialty, homemade vanilla ice cream!

Rivers was a happy boy and was very aware that this celebration was for him. He was smiles all night... Oh and he quite enjoyed the cupcake too!!

Happy #1 Birthday!!!

Yesterday was our little tadpoles birthday! His very first.

We had such a special day celebrating such a sweet and joyful boys first year of life. Looking back on this year I am beyond grateful for the healthy strong little man we have! He started out as a tiny little 6 pounder born three weeks before his due date. He then dealt with seven very rough weeks of a nasty case of RSV. We spent many sleepless nights keeping one eye open watching anxiously as that little chest moved up and down.

Now here we are at the one year mark with a strong healthy boy who has not only thrived but out done all his siblings on his physical abilities. He began walking at 10 1/2 months old... A whole month earlier than his big sister Anna. He is now flying all over the house and boy does he make his big sisters proud!

On the other hand, his big brother still sees him as a bit of competition .... BUT, they do genuinely love each other! Out of nowhere they will randomly hug or pat each other on the back!

Rivers is pure joy! The happiest baby and the friendliest little guy you could want to meet. When he sees you coming he runs with big arms open wide and squeals ... And my heart melts. When you pick him up he puts that sweet little head on your shoulder and wraps his little arms around your neck.... Again, melting heart!

I am so grateful for the very unexpected yet amazingly incredible blessing of our little Rivers Joseph!!

This was a whirlwind weekend. We spent the usual time at Jimmys Uncle Kens house... Lake Texoma, cousins, ribs, sunshine, roman candles and just general memories for our children to have for a lifetime!

Then we ended the weekend with a day at my parents pool, a cookout and fireworks! Again, more wonderful memories and now the eve of our little "tadpoles" birthday!

Ben and baseball

Ben's name mean "son of my right hand" and it couldn't be any more accurate. He wants to be with Jimmy every second and he is just like Jimmy in so many ways. One of the main ways being his love of sports. When Ben was just 7 or 8 months old he would scream with excitement to watch Jimmy toss around a football or hit a golf ball. He gets so excited when there are sports on TV and LOVES playing ball with Jimmy whenever he possibly can.

We took Ben to see his cousin Jakes little league game a few weeks ago and he really had a great time. He spent most of the game trying to get a ball or bat out of the dugout!

Good news and bad news

The other day, mom and I are sitting at the kitchen table having lunch with the kiddos and Serene says "I have good news and I have bad news"... "good News, Nana has a good swing set. Bad news, we don't."

Mom and I thought that was too cute! I was a bit disappointed to know that she apparently doesn't like our swing set.... At least not compared to Nana and Pop's! :)

Less than a month

It is so hard to believe but our oldest boy will be TWO in less than a month... How did this happen. It seems like only yesterday we were taking him on his first plane trip to my brothers wedding at four weeks old. Now he is a i100% little boy... Babyhood is nearly gone. On Sunday night I did have the privilege of holding and snuggling him, a rare treat with this busy little man!

This picture is of a worm he caught the other night after one of the rain storms. He was so proud! Hard to believe my once tiny baby is a bug catching, sports loving, all things outdoors little mini man! Time has gone far too quickly. A reminder to me to take advantage of every minute as they do pass like seconds in the grand scheme of things.
